How to Contact Home
This mock eLearning experience was created using the feedback from probationary teachers in a school district.
-
Audience: teachers new to the school district who do not all teach the same subjects and have a basic understanding of how to use technology. Teachers had the choice of taking this experience individually or in small groups together
-
Responsibilities: analysis, action mapping, storyboard development, graphics, learning and development, instructional design
-
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, MindMeister, Google Suite, Adobe Illustrator, photo editing software

My Process
To begin my analysis, I had both in-person and virtual conversations with our Subject Matter Experts (or SMEs), probationary teachers. We spent a good amount of time going through the process of contacting home and the different avenues that teachers can take when contacting home. We also talked about how the home circumstances of students’ lives can have an impact on how the contact home is made and that should be taken into account. I then created the business goal for this project:
The teacher’s confidence in making a meaningful contact home will increase 25%by the end of the semester as teachers make contacts home about disruptive classroom behavior.
Once I finished the conversations in the analysis phase, I employed Cathy Moore’s technique called Action Mapping. Using this technique, I honed in on 5 key actions that a teacher must make when contacting home

After the Action Map had been reviewed and finalized with the SMEs, I began working on the storyboard. I decided to create a narrative of having the conversation about contacting home with a veteran teacher who walked through the process with the user. This allowed the experience to feel more personal and informal. I didn’t want teachers to feel intimidated through the course; I wanted them to feel like they were working with a friend. I then created scenarios that the user would go through to contact home. It was important that the scenarios were authentic ones so I asked SMEs permission to use their stories as inspiration for the situations.

Next, I began working on my storyboard for the project. I first focused on creating the script for the scenarios and the choices that could be made. I then worked to create graphics for the different rooms and characters for the project.

This leads to my current phase, the design phase. I am using stock photos, photo editing software, and Adobe Illustrator to create all of the assets for the project. I am putting all of the assets into Articulate Storyline. While the project is currently still in progress, I want to show what I have thus far. I will update this page as the project progresses.
